Because two events (or things) follow one another in close
temporal succession the first event is claimed to be the cause of the
second. The form of the argument is: B precedes C; therefore B is the
cause of C. We may take as a hypothesis for testing, that B is a
cause of C, but we should not forget that anyone of a score
of other preceding events is equally worthy of investigation.
