Definition of Appeal to Ridicule:
An attempt is made to influence us to accept a certain proposition by poking fun at those who oppose the proposition. In the example cited to the right, the impression will be left on the minds of the others that the questioner must have been talking nonsense, since it cannot otherwise be supposed that the sergeant was unable to understand the question. At least that is the impression the sergeant hopes to leave.

The sergeant, on the first day of class, having made a certain statement, is asked an embarrassing question by a member of the class. Preferring a cheap victory to an honest discussion, the sergeant replies sarcastically, 'I am afraid, Private Jones, that I cannot understand what you mean. You are too deep for me.' He then goes on to the next questioner.
